How To Conceive Twins

Twins have always been a fascination to the world. So it’s no wonder anyone would want a chance at double blessings.  In this article, we’ll discuss: types of twins, factors that influence your chances of getting pregnant with twins, and how to conceive twins naturally and medically.

Types Of Twins You Can Conceive

Before you jump on the bandwagon for conceiving twins, you need to understand how their conception happens.

To start, there are two different types of twin births.

identical twins

Identical Twins

Identical Twins

The first one is identical twin birth.

Identical twins are formed when an egg is fertilized by one sperm, like in any average conception.

The difference is this fertilized egg divides itself into two separate embryos. This ends up creating genetically identical babies. Same gender, DNA, and phenotype.

What’s more? They share the same placenta.

Fraternal Twins

The second type is non-identical or fraternal twin birth.

Non-identical twins are formed when two eggs are released at once and fertilized by two different sperms. The babies share little to no resemblance.

They also have different DNA and different placentas.

How To Conceive Twins Naturally

If you either don’t want to go for the overpriced scientific stimulation, or you just prefer to let everything happen naturally, then here are a few things you can try:

Eat More Folate

The Yoruba women of West Africa have the highest rates of twin births in the world.

A Dr. David Williams discovered their diet contains a lot of sweet potatoes or yam. This diet stimulated the release of more than one egg, which caused twin births.

Many kinds of sweet potato contain natural folate which is known to increase your chance of having twins.

Increase Your Dairy and Red Meat Products

Red meat and dairy products may increase your chances of having twins.

Firstly, because the growth hormones from the products are absorbed by your body to stimulate stronger ovulation.

Secondly, the absorbed hormones may help your developing embryos in the early stages.

Conceive During Breastfeeding

It may seem impossible to conceive during breastfeeding because it is a natural form of birth control.

Funny twist is that if you manage conception during this period, well, you’ve got higher chances at conceiving twins. That’s because the most fertile time of a woman’s life is three months after delivery.

How To Conceive Twins With Fertility Drugs And Medical Treatments

Folic Acid

Regular use of folic acid before trying to conceive can increase your chances.

Folic acid contains folate which triggers the onset of multiple egg release during ovulation. This can only increase your chance of having fraternal twins, not identical ones.

IVF Treatment

In Vitro Fertilization treatment is done by fertilzing an egg with sperm inside a petridish.

To conceive twins, the lab will retrieve double viable eggs from the mother or donor. Then, fertilize each one together.

If successful, the eggs are then transferred to the mother or surrogate’s uterus.

Clomid

Clomid is usually prescribed for women with ovulatory problems, but can also be used to induce multiple ovulations in women with regular ovulation.

The most common clomid brand is Serophene, and can be prescribed by a certified gynecologist.

Don’t take clomid if you have fibroids, ovarian cyst, and low ovarian reserves.

Femara

Like clomid, femara (letrozole) is an oral medication used for stimulating ovulation in women with unexplained causes of infertility.

Gonadotropins

Gonadotropins are fertility injections that contain follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) or luteinizing hormone (LH) or a combination of both.

They are also used to stimulate ovulation, and also increase chances of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)

IUI Treatment

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple fertility treatment that is successful with the combo of fertility drugs or without.

It is also known as artificial insemination. This involves the transfer of specially washed semen into the uterus through special instruments.

What Factors Influence Your Chances To Conceive  Twins?

Here are a few of the factors behind the occurrence of twin births:

Ethnicity

Your ethnicity also matter in this situation because Asian and Hispanic women are the least likely group to produce twins or other multiple births.

Caucasians have a better chance, but Black women with strong African ancestry take the lead. The highest rates of twin births in the world can be traced to the Yoruba ethnic group in West Africa.

Family History

You have a higher chance at giving birth to twins if there’s a history of multiple twin births (fraternal twins) in your family.

The chances are increased when it comes from your mother’s side. This means there’s a likelihood that like the other females in your family, you might also release more than one egg during ovulation.

Number of Children

Your chances of carrying twins will increase with each previous pregnancy you have.

Age

Older women, i.e. women above 35 are more likely to conceive twins, the older they get.

This is attributed to the rise in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels with age. This happens because the eggs in an older women need more stimulation and preparation than in a younger woman.

This prompts the follicles to overreact to the higher level of FSH, and release more than one egg during ovulation.

Weight

Women with a higher BMI, especially ones over 30, before pregnancy are more likely to conceive twins than women with healthier BMI.

Extra fat has the ability to increase estrogen levels, which can overstimulate the ovaries into releasing more than one egg during ovulation.

This procedure is not advised because the weight may lead to more complications at the later stages of pregnancy.
